THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT UNIT

With an average yearly operational budget of £1.3 million the Economic Development Unit is part of the Council's Environmental Services Department and consists of three specialised functions; Economic Development, Tourism Development and Lagan Corridor.

Key activities of the unit include:

  • Business development; investment promotion; job creation; city centre management
  • Strategic infrastructure and capital development; regeneration
  • Tourism development & marketing the City as a visitor destination
  • Tourist visitor servicing
  • Regeneration of Lisburn's Lagan Corridor

Continuous Improvement activities undertaken by the Economic Development Unit demonstrate the Council's commitment to ensuring value for money and quality in all aspects of the Economic Development Service and compliance with all Section 75 Equality legislation.

Tourism Development

The Council's Tourism Development section successfully sourced capital grant money from European Funds for new Tourism business start-ups in rural areas, an ongoing programme of events, development of outreach visitor servicing initiatives and new visitor signage constructed throughout the City Centre. The Tourism Development Unit also has responsibility for the two Tourist Information Centres situated at Hillsborough Courthouse and Lisburn Square in the City Centre: staff in these centres provide an advisory service to the public on tourism amenities and accommodation within the City, and on events taking place throughout the year.

Lagan Corridor

The Lagan Corridor is a river regeneration initiative focusing on a seven mile stretch of the River Lagan, and aims to encourage sustainable development access to the river and protection of the riverside environment.

Chairman of the Economic Development Committee 2008/09 is Councillor Allan Ewart, and Vice Chair is Councillor Jenny Palmer.
