IRISH LINEN CENTRE & LISBURN MUSEUM December 2008 BELFAST 1911: A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A CITY

12 December 2008 - 28 February 2009 A major travelling exhibition which marks the 400th anniversary of the Flight of the Earls in 2007. This event was a turning point in Irish history and paved the way for the subsequent settlement of English and Scots in Ulster and the establishment of the town of Lisburn, then known as Lisnegarvey, in 1609. A small display of the story of the 400 years of history of Castle Gardens celebrating the recent completion of the restoration of the gardens. Guided historical tours of the Gardens are available (see below). A display of some of the varied and interesting items in the Museum's collections, including some new and rare acquisitions which have been donated by local people. - LISBURN HISTORICAL SOCIETY 40TH ANNIVERSARY
Lisburn Historical Society was established in 1967 and has close ties with the Museum. Its monthly programme of lectures takes place at the Museum. In 2000 its collection, which had been painstakingly built up in the early years, was handed over to Lisburn Borough Council for safe keeping in the Museum. A small display of information and photographs from the Society's archives commemorate the founding of the Society. A number of pieces on display in Curator's Choice are from the Society's collection. - THE DUBOURDIEU FAMILY – HUGUENOTS OF LISBURN
A display of some rare surveying instruments, books and portraits dating back to the 18th century which have recently been donated by the descendants of an old Huguenot family. - THE GREAT FIRE OF LISBURN, 1707
A small exhibition in the Museum reception area commemorating the great fire of Lisburn which occurred on 20 April 1707. - FLAX TO FABRIC - THE STORY OF IRISH LINEN
Situated in Lisburn’s 17th century Market House, this permanent exhibition features the story of the Irish linen industry from earliest times and includes skilled demonstrations of hand spinning of flax and hand loom weaving of fine linen cloth on original looms. Visitors can see the finest costume, dress and household linens dating from a past when Irish linen from Lisburn was known world-wide. Why not visit the Museum Shop and purchase an exclusive range of damask table linen with a ‘flax flower’ pattern designed by staff of Lisburn Museum. It’s uniquely available only in Lisburn. The newly restored historic gardens, dating from the 17th century, are open from 8.00am – 5.00pm daily, October - March. Guided historical walking tours of the gardens in Castle Street, starting at the Museum and lasting approx. 1 hour, are available free of charge. These must be prebooked (min. of 5 people) and the times and further information are available from Museum Reception staff.
