Mayor’s Charity – Diabetes (UK) Northern Ireland The Mayor, Cllr Ronnie Crawford's, Mayoral Charity, Diabetes Northern Ireland is up and running. If you would like to contribute directly to the charity or organise an activity in aid of Diabetes (UK) Northern Ireland, the Mayor's Office would like to hear from you. The Mayor said: "One of the reasons for my charity choice is that diabetes affects so many people. It is an extremely common condition affecting people across all walks of life and most of us know of someone who has the condition. The various 'Types' of diabetes can be very serious, even life-threatening in cases if not properly diagnosed and managed," he added. Diabetes UK helps people with diabetes, their family, friends and carers. Its mission is to improve people's lives and work toward a future without diabetes. Over 62,000 people in the Province are diagnosed with this condition and an estimated 15,000 -20,000 people are undiagnosed. Type 2 diabetes is set to increase dramatically over the next 10 -15 years due to factors such an increasingly ageing population and increases in the numbers of people identified as being overweight. Cllr Crawford has set up a Committee to work with him on his charity. Alderman Ivan Davis is helping the Mayor with his efforts. "There is a local voluntary group in the City who work with the Northern Ireland sector of Diabetes UK, so I would like to help the group with its work by raising as much money as possible. Please give generously," said the Mayor. Anyone wishing to get involved with the Mayor’s Charity should contact the Mayor's Secretary at Lagan Valley Island on T: 028 9250 9331. |
